Biogas Science 2014 congress in Vienna (Austria)

The AD-WINE project successes have been presented at the "Biogas Science 2014" congress held in Vienna (Austria) between 26th and 30 th October 2014.

The AD-WINE project began in 2011 to provide an economically viable solution for treating the winery wastewater. Its main objective has focused on the development of an innovative anaerobic treatment plant by using high performance anaerobic digesters for the treatment of medium sized winery effluents (currently, this is only feasible in large wineries).

From the data obtained during the previous months and AEMA´s experience in the treatment of winery wastewater, a potential energy and economic comparison between a conventional aerobic system and the new anaerobic system developed for the treatment of winery wastewater has been presented.

The results obtained reflected the feasibility of incorporating this new system due to the reduction of energy consumption and sludge production and the valorization of biogas generated.

AEMA, through this project, will develop a new type of high performance reactors to reduce the investment costs, and incorporate a robust control scheme to simplify the management of anaerobic digesters and minimized performance uncertainty. This technology will help the wine industry to reduce the environmental impact of wine production and to reduce the costs of treatment and waste management in terms on lower energy consumption and sludge generation.
